Bottom line: Current is a good fit if you’re paid by direct deposit and want paycheck tools: early pay, a fee-free overdraft and an advance of up to $1,000. It isn’t a place to park a large balance.

It also isn’t a bank. Current calls itself “a financial technology company, not an FDIC-insured bank,” and banking services come from Choice Financial Group and/or Cross River Bank, both FDIC member banks.

Open it for the paycheck features and the $75 bonus. Skip it if you want a branch, plain cash deposits or the best savings rate.

The $75 bonus

Set up direct deposits of $1,500 or more and earn a $75 bonus with code WELCOME75.

The code isn’t optional. Enter WELCOME75 when you sign up, or the bonus won’t apply.

Current’s offer terms count the $1,500 as eligible payroll deposits within your first 35 days. They’re cumulative, so two paychecks can get you there. The bonus is paid about 10 business days after you cross $1,500.

What doesn’t count: non-direct-deposit ACH transfers, payments from apps like Venmo, Cash App, Zelle and PayPal, mobile check deposits, cash, and one-time deposits such as tax refunds.

One more thing. Current’s own homepage doesn’t list the $75, so don’t be surprised when you can’t find it there. It comes with the code.

No end date is listed for this bonus. Check the offer terms on the day you sign up.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Paycheck Advance of up to $1,000 with no credit check.
  • Direct deposits up to 2 days early.
  • Fee-free overdraft once you have $200 or more in eligible direct deposits over 35 days.
  • 40,000+ fee-free ATMs.
  • Savings Pods that pay up to 4.00% APY on the first $2,000 each.
  • The iPhone app is rated 4.8 out of 5 on the App Store.

Cons

  • It isn’t a bank, and FDIC pass-through insurance applies only if certain conditions are met.
  • Instant delivery of a Paycheck Advance costs an Instant Access Fee.
  • The 4.00% Pod rate covers only $6,000 in total. The rest earns 0.00%.
  • Out-of-network ATMs cost $2.50 per transaction, and a cash deposit costs $3.50.
  • Monthly cost isn’t stated on Current’s pages, and neither is the price of Current Max.
  • Overdraft limits can change at Current’s discretion.

Paycheck Advance

Paycheck Advance lets you pull part of your next paycheck early, up to $1,000. Finco Advance LLC, a financial technology company and not a bank, offers it.

Here’s how the cost works. Delivery within about an hour is subject to an Instant Access Fee, and the amount shows in the app when you request the advance. Wait up to 3 days and it’s free.

To qualify you need eligible payroll deposits of $200 or more going into Current. There’s no credit check, and withdrawals and repayments aren’t reported. Repayment is automatic from your next payroll deposit.

It’s described as earned wage access, not a loan. Your limit depends on eligibility and can change. So check your own number in the Overview tab before you plan around $1,000.

If you can wait 3 days, use the free option. The instant fee is the price of speed.

Overdraft, early pay and ATMs

Direct deposit can arrive up to 2 days early, as soon as your employer sends it. Employer or bank delays can still slow it down.

The fee-free overdraft needs $200 or more in eligible direct deposits over the preceding 35 days, plus other requirements. Current sets the amount and can change it. Negative balances have to be repaid within 60 days of the first transaction that caused them.

You get 40,000+ fee-free ATMs. Outside that network it’s $2.50 per transaction, and depositing cash costs $3.50 per deposit.

Savings Pods

Savings Pods pay up to 4.00% APY, and the rate is variable. The 4.00% needs at least one eligible payroll deposit of $200 or more over a 35-day period. Without it, you earn 0.25% with $0.01 in a Pod.

The cap matters. 4.00% applies to the first $2,000 per Pod, up to $6,000 in total. Anything above that earns 0.00%.

So the most you’d earn at 4.00% is about $240 a year on $6,000. If you want to save $20,000, use a dedicated savings account. EverBank pays 4.20% APY on all balances for new accounts as of 10/09/2026, and Ally Bank pays 3.1% APY as of 10/12/26.

What it costs

This is where Current is hard to pin down. Current’s pages don’t state a monthly fee for the account or a price for Current Max. They say “some fees may apply,” including out-of-network ATM fees and late payment fees.

What is stated: $2.50 for an out-of-network ATM transaction, $3.50 per cash deposit, and an Instant Access Fee on instant advances. Check the app for the current price before you commit.

Current Max is a paid subscription that can also qualify you for Points. Its price isn’t listed.

Who should open it

Open Current if you’re paid by direct deposit, you sometimes run short before payday, and you’d use early pay or the advance. The $75 bonus is a nice start.

Skip it if you’re paid by check, you handle a lot of cash, or you want your money at a chartered bank. Skip it too if you’d rather not pay anything for instant delivery.

Is it better than Chime? They overlap. Chime’s SpotMe starts at $20 and its MyPay goes to $750 on Plus or $1,000 on Prime, while Current’s advance page says up to $1,000.

How to open

Download the app or go through the link above, and enter code WELCOME75. Then send your paycheck to the new account. The bonus, early pay and overdraft all depend on direct deposit.

Current’s support hours aren’t stated on its pages, so look in the app for help.

Current vs. alternatives

  • Chime: a fintech with no monthly fee, early pay up to 2 days and SpotMe overdraft starting at $20.
  • Ally Bank: a Member FDIC bank with $0 overdraft items and CoverDraft up to $100, or up to $250 after qualifying direct deposits.
  • EverBank: a national bank whose EverBank Checking has no monthly account fee and $25 to open.
