Bottom line: Ally Bank is a strong all-in-one online bank for people who want checking, savings and buckets under one login with no monthly fees. It isn’t the top payer on savings anymore.
Open it if you want one simple place for everyday money and a savings account that comes with no minimum. Skip it if your only goal is the highest rate on a large balance, because EverBank and CIT Bank list higher savings rates today.
Ally Bank is a Member FDIC and Equal Housing Lender, and Ally describes it as its direct banking subsidiary.
What Ally Bank offers
Ally sells five main deposit products: a Spending (checking) account, Online Savings, a money market account, CDs and IRA savings. Everything is online, and you manage it in the Ally app or at ally.com.
The pitch is simplicity. No monthly maintenance fees. No minimum balance requirements to open. One app for it all.
Deposits are insured by the FDIC up to the maximum allowed by law.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No monthly maintenance fees and $0 to open on the savings, Spending and CD products.
- No overdraft fees. Ally’s page puts it flat: “we’ll never charge you an overdraft fee.”
- Up to 30 savings buckets to split goals inside one account.
- 75,000+ no-fee ATMs, with up to $10 back per statement cycle on other ATMs’ fees.
- Phone support at 1-877-247-2559, listed as 24/7.
- Direct deposits available up to 2 days sooner on Spending.
Cons
- The 3.1% savings APY trails some online banks, with EverBank at 4.20% and CIT Bank at 3.75% on $5,000 or more.
- Savings and money market have a limit of 10 withdrawals and transfers per statement cycle.
- Spending pays only 0.10% under $15,000 and 0.25% at $15,000 or more.
- CD rates of 2.8% to 3% sit below EverBank’s Performance CDs, which run up to 4.35%.
- No sign-up bonus is shown on the bank page.
Online Savings
Ally’s Online Savings pays 3.1% APY, correct as of 10/12/26. The rate is variable, so it can change after you open.
It costs nothing to open and has no monthly fee. Interest compounds daily on your end-of-day balance. There are balance tiers (under $5,000, $5,000 to $24,999.99, and $25,000 or more), but the current APY applies across all of them.
The standout feature is buckets. You can make up to 30 “digital envelopes” for a vacation, an emergency fund or a car repair, and the account still earns interest on the total. Boosters like Recurring Transfers, Round Ups and Surprise Savings can feed them for you.
The catch: you get 10 limited withdrawals and transfers per statement cycle, combined.
Going over doesn’t cost a fee. But if you do it “on more than an occasional basis,” your account can be closed.
Spending (checking) account
Ally’s checking product is called Spending. It has a $0 monthly maintenance fee, no minimum deposit, and an APY of 0.10% under $15,000 or 0.25% at $15,000 or more, as of 10/12/2026.
The ATM story is good. You get 75,000+ no-fee ATMs, and up to $10 per statement cycle comes back if another ATM charges you.
Overdrafts work differently than at most banks. Overdraft items cost $0. A feature called CoverDraft covers up to $100 on qualifying transactions at no charge, or up to $250 after qualifying direct deposits. It isn’t a line of credit, and anything past your limit is declined.
Direct deposits can show up to 2 days sooner.
Money market and CDs
The money market account also pays 3.10% APY as of 10/12/2026. It comes with a debit card and checks, unlimited free withdrawals at 75,000+ Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs, and the same 10 limited transactions per cycle as savings.
Ally’s CDs, as of 10/12/2026, are 2.8% on the High Yield and No Penalty CDs and 3% on the Raise Your Rate CD. No minimum to open on any of them.
Raise Your Rate lets your rate go up once over its 2-year term or twice over its 4-year term if Ally’s rate for that term rises. The No Penalty CD lets you take everything out after the first six days and keep the interest.
Compare before you lock in. EverBank’s 24-month Performance CD is 4.35% APY as of 10/09/2026, and CIT Bank’s 1-Year CD is 4.00%.
What it costs
Not much.
Savings, money market and Spending all carry a $0 monthly maintenance fee, with no minimum balance requirements to open.
The only real cost is a limit. Go over 10 savings transfers a cycle too often and your account can be closed.
Fees may reduce earnings on several products, so read the account terms for the full fee list before you count on a zero.
Who should open it
Ally is a good fit if you want one online bank for checking, savings and CDs, and you’d rather not think about overdraft fees. If you like naming your savings goals, the buckets will suit you.
It’s less of a fit if you deal in cash. Ally is an online bank, and cash goes in through a Spending account as a side feature, not a branch visit.
And if you’ll park $20,000 or more and want the best rate, price it first. 3.1% on $20,000 is $620 a year. EverBank’s 4.20% on the same balance would be $840 a year before any rate changes. That’s a $220 gap, and both rates are variable.
How to open
You can open an account at ally.com or in the app. You can add money by online transfer, eCheck mobile deposit, wire, mailed check or direct deposit.
Customer care is by phone at 1-877-247-2559, listed as 24/7, plus chat and secure messages once you’re logged in.
